Reader,
This week, like many before it, has been riddled with the sort of fatigue that has one wondering if they’ll ever read again so this will be my most succinct yet.
On Friday night, I met someone who was reading If An Egyptian Cannot Speak English by Noor Naga and we had quite the conversation about it seeing as one of us (me) hasn’t finished it yet. It reminded me of the sort of community that e-books cannot afford one. Now it has me thinking if I should take to carrying a small floppy paperback every so often because it’s a great conversation-starter.
If books make for great conversation starters, imagine making one. That’s exactly what a few people did during a zine-making workshop run by nd00ta and convened by Nairobi Contemporary Art Institue (NCAI) on Saturday last week. It got me feeling so excited about crafting that on Monday of this week I bought some supplies. For the craft people in Nairobi and its environs, I’d love to know where you get your supplies (I got mine at Moira’s at Sarit Centre, a shop I’d never noticed before - despite having a good sense of direction in the mall).
Quick news/ things that may be of interest:
Dracula Daily, which I mentioned in a past entry, continues apace. Jump on if you’re keen
If writing postcards is something you enjoy, check out this website I found out about via Rachel Syme. I send my first postcard this week and I’m really excited. Related: you can send me books, postcards, letters, and assorted gifts via PO Box 102439, Jamia Posta 00101, Nairobi, Kenya
I have finished one book since I last wrote - a hybrid read of Drama Free: a guide to managing unhealthy family relationships by Nedra Glover Tawwab (narrated by the author) - review forthcoming. I haven’t put out a video since the Labour Day one (you can watch it here) and this week saw me make no progress on that front. To catch the ones I’m working on when they’re done, subscribe to the channel if you haven’t yet!
As ever, please write back to me and tell me what books you’re reading or looking forward to reading — it’s always a great time talking about books.
Enjoy the rest of the week and have a lovely time reading. Talk to you soon!
